Microsoft Attacks Apple (AAPL)’s New iPhones In A Bizarre Ad
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) [stockdata ticker=”MSFT”] CEO Steve Ballmer is set to retire next year. But he hasn’t stopped committing one blunder after another. This time he takes on Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) [stockdata ticker=”AAPL”]. On Sunday, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) launched a series of seven video ads titled “A Fly On The Wall In Cupertino.” The Seattle-based software giant tried to poke fun at Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s new iPhones.
However, the ads received harsh criticism on the Web. Ultimately, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) had to pull those ads down within just a few hours of publishing them on YouTube. After removing the ads, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) told The Next Web that they wanted it to be a light-hearted poke at Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), but it was off the mark. Before Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) took down the videos, a YouTube user grabbed a copy of them.
With these clips, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) intended to tell people that the new iPhones have nothing new except colors and the fingerprint scanner. The ad, set up in early 2013, shows two Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) employees pitching ideas to their boss about the design and features of the new iPhones. Two employees come late to a meeting, saying that their iWatch had to be sent back to R&D. And it keeps getting worse with every scene.
The worst thing about the ad is the depiction of executives. One character resembles Steve Jobs and another looks like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s design head Sir Jony Ive. Surprisingly, the ad does nothing to showcase how Windows Phone is superior to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS7.
Anyway, that’s not the first time a tech firm has attacked its competitor. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) [stockdata ticker=”AAPL”] mocked personal computers running on Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Windows OS in its famous Mac vs. PC ads featuring David Mitchell and John Hodgman. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) [stockdata ticker=”MSFT”] has, too, taken a shot at Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) [stockdata ticker=”GOOG”] through its ridiculous and ineffectual “Scroogled” ad campaign.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares were down 3.18% to $450.12 in early trading on Tuesday. The stock is down 11.67% this year so far.
