First state to legalize abortion now proposes banning it

Pro-lifers in the first state to legalize abortion have introduced a bill to roll back a liberalization of abortion laws in Colorado by introducing a bill that would make it a felony for individuals who take any kind of action that results in an abortion.

The bill, HB 1133, is sponsored by Steve Humphrey, a Republican from Severance, Colorado.

“I ran as a pro-life candidate and this is an issue that is important to my constituents. This should not be a surprise to anybody.” Humphrey said. “My constituents, whom I represent, feel strongly about this issue and I owe it to them to attempt to advance this issue. I realize this is an emotional issue and my intent is not to rub someone’s nose in the issue, but when we’re talking about protecting human life this is a discussion that we need to have.”

While other pro-life bills attempt to restrict abortion in some way, Humphrey’s bill goes even farther, stating its intent is “to make the practice of abortion illegal in the state of Colorado” and to repeal all current laws and statutes that relate to abortion in the state.

The bill would make committing an abortion a felony, with only a few exceptions. One of those is an exemption for the mother from prosecution for violating the law. Other protections are for a licensed physician who is performing medical treatment that results in the accidental or unintentional death of the unborn child or while performing a medical procedure designed or intended to prevent the death of a pregnant mother.

The bill is not just limited to doctors and health care providers who perform abortions. It also provides criminal penalties for individuals who harm a woman with the intent to terminate a pregnancy. Additionally, a person driving a bicycle, low-power scooter, electrical assisted bicycle, or motor vehicle in a reckless manner that results in the termination of a pregnancy could also be prosecuted for careless driving resulting in the termination of a pregnancy.

Christy Rodriguez, executive director of Colorado Campaign for Life, who helped craft the bill’s language, said the “pro-aborts” are already raging against the bill.

“The pro-aborts are raging against this bill, well go ahead, let them rage,” Rodriguez said. “Right now we have unprecedented support by Colorado legislators for unborn babies.”

Rodriguez explained that if Democrats are upset about the bill they have only themselves to blame.

During the last legislative session Democrats, who control both chambers of the state legislature as well as the governorship, passed through a series of radical liberal bills on a range of pet causes, including several controversial gun control bills that resulted in a recall of elected officials who voted for the bills.

One of the more controversial bills was one passed by Democrats following the trial of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted of killing infants who had been born alive.

Gosnell’s case attracted attention from even the generally pro-abortion establishment media with its horrific testimony of babies born alive, left on shelves breathing for 20 minutes then summarily killed with the spinal column snip.

The testimony of cat feces, filthy instruments, nonworking instruments, and other circumstances revealed the inner workings of a U.S. abortion industry that revolted almost everyone who heard it.

However, in a slap to pro-life voters in the state, Democrats passed a bill that essentially gives abortionists like Gosnell a free pass in the state. The bill stated its purpose was to “repeal the criminal abortion statutes” that existed in state law.

The bill received the support of the eugenicist founded organization Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, because it equated the child as nothing more than an inanimate object on a par with any other property.

“They made Colorado a Kermit Gosnell friendly state and we have to do something about it,” Rodriguez said.

While pro-abortion supporters frequently attempt to paint pro-lifers as not understanding the issues women face when choosing an abortion, Rodriguez said she personally knows the horror of having an abortion.

“I was one of those desperate women. Years ago I had an abortion in New York in downtown Manhattan. I know what it is like to be treated like cattle in an abortion mill,” Rodriguez explained. “I also know coming through an abortion is one of the saddest and intense issues a woman has to go through. I have to live with the thought of knowing I killed another human being.”

Following the recall of two Democratic Senators and the resignation of a third who supported a series of gun control bills that were among some of the most restrictive in the nation, Republicans made it plain they were going to attempt to roll back some of the bills passed last year.

The Democrats have shown no sign of backing down from advancing their liberal agenda. One of the first acts was to kill a bill that would have prohibited individuals from using welfare cards  at ATMs located in strip clubs and pot shops.
