According to the claims of Judy Garland’s ex-husband, Sid Luft, the actress was molested by actors who were portraying Munchkins on the set of The Wizard of Oz (1939). Back then Garland was only 16 years old!
Sid Luft’s memoirs are finally being published 15 years after his death and they are titled – Judy and I: My life with Judy Garland. In this biography, he reveals personal details of his love and life with the Hollywood star that became famous playing Dorothy in this legendary movie.
“They would make Judy’s life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress,” Sid Luft says in the book. “The men were 40 or more years old… They thought they could get away with anything because they were so small!”
This is not the first time someone spoke about a very bad behavior of hundreds of actors who played Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz. There were some rumors that they had being constantly drunk, and frequently had mass orgies in a hotel. “They had sex orgies in the hotel, and we had to have police on just about every floor!” stated the film producer Mervyn LeRoy in 1939.
July Garland once spoke about Munchkins, commenting their behavior. “They were very tiny, they were drunks… They put them all in a hotel in Culver City, and they got smashed every night, and they had to pick them up in butterfly nets!” said the actress in 1967. She also told about the invitation she got from one of the actors. “One of them who was a gentleman of about 40, asked me out to dinner. I couldn’t say I didn’t want to go out because you’re a midget, so I just said – No, my mother wouldn’t like it… But he said to bring her too.”
Judy Garland died at the age of 47.
Sid Luft ‘s book Judy and I: My life with Judy Garland will be published in March, and will represent his testament to the love of his life.
