According to the Associated Press, on Monday around 6 a.m, police held 16 people who were suspected to be in connection with the armed robbery of reality star Kim Kardashian West. They were arrested in different locations around Paris and the surrounding cities. The suspects can be held for up to 96 hours before they must be charged or released. A number of them were reportedly well known to detectives for armed robbery, and were picked up in coordinated raids, most of them in the Paris region, but also in Normandy and the French Riviera.
On October 3, 2016, Kardashian West was tied up and held at gunpoint by masked men who stole $10 million worth of jewelry, including her $4 million ring, from the apartment where she was staying for Paris Fashion Week. At the time, a rep for Kardashian West said she was “badly shaken but physically unharmed.” Kardashian West reportedly told police that after her attackers left, she was able to escape from her bondage to free her hands and call her bodyguard. Detectives said it was the biggest theft of jewels from an individual in France in 20 years.
Early reports say “exploitable DNA” was found on a piece of jewelry dropped by the robbers as they made their getaway on bicycles. A pedestrian discovered the platinum and diamond-encrusted Jacob & Co. Cross, valued at $33,000, and turned it in to the police.
A police source told Agence France-Presse that money and documents had been found in the raids. French police have also been in contact with colleagues in Belgium, where they believe the robbers tried to dispose of the stolen jewels in the world-famous jewelry quarter in Anvers.
Although the Paris prosecutors office have offered no comment about the ongoing operations, PEOPLE magazine reported that suspects are already being brought before two magistrates Monday morning for questioning as the process continues.
After the horrifying event, the 36-year-old reality star recently took a step back into the spotlight after a hiatus from the public eye and social media. In a promo for the upcoming season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, she shares the ordeal with her sisters Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian.
“They’re going to shoot me in the back,” she tearfully recalls in the clip shared by E! News. “There’s no way out.” “It makes me so upset to think about it,” she added.
